I was looking for a new camping spot that was close to home. Found one on the hiking websites that looked like it would do the job. The posts showed that it was only 50 miles away, 16 sites with picnic tables and fire rings, no power or water but has a outhouse. Perfect! I told Donna I found a new spot that I wanted to try out and it was only about 7 miles further than our go to spot at The Pocket. The 7 mile statement was true if you are a crow. Ok, there is a mountain between the campgrounds that we had to go around making the distance better than 30 miles. Ooops, my bad.
None of my maps had this campground on them, paper or electronic. I did have driving directions from on of the hiking websites so I made my own map with my phone app and off we go.
We turn off the main road, following the GPS directions, onto a paved cow path. Donna gave me the look which gave me just a moment of hesitation. I have been accused a couple of times of taking "the scenic route". After about 7 miles of scenic route we turn right onto cow path #2. No look on this turn, just a glance. 3 more miles to end of road where FS955 picks up. For those who don't know FS stands for Forest Service Road. Now we are on a single lane gravel road with a 24ft motorhome. I do not get a look or a glance. Now I am getting words in the form of questions. I assure Donna that FS stands for "Fairly Scenic" and that the campground is just around the corner.
We turn the corner and there it is or was. No sign, no picnic tables, no fire rings and no signs of anyone being there in awhile. Donna was pretty sure she heard banjos playing off in the distance.
We are now set up at the Pocket Campground away from the banjo music.
